CSA or Community Supported Agriculture is a pre-paid box or share program where the Farmer sells a share at the beginning of the growing season. The farmer then is able to use that money to purchase seeds and supplies ahead of the season, saving on costs. The farmer is also able to plan how much of each crop will be planted and how many plantings based on the number of shares. The farmer then is able to pass that savings on to the CSA member.

Hello Again to some of you, and Welcome to our group 2 quarter shares! The first week of pick ups went very smooth. The extreme temperature swings from a cold May, to 90 degree temps for a week, back to a moderate season have caused some plants like broccoli and cauliflower to bolt and set seed, making them unusable. Fortunately, we have plenty of veggies coming along to take their place. Strawberries are a short season so we will be seeing if we will be able to provide them to all shares in the next weeks or not.

Hello again and welcome to week 4! We have a few new items this week including colored cauliflower, green beans, and English peas. We just heard that blueberries will be in sometime next week and our corn will be in next weeks share, looks like we will start picking around the 6th. We have heard some of you excited about bok choy , and others not so much. This will be the last of the bok choy until fall shares!

We anticipate Peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes will be in towards mid July, and our long awaited fresh garlic will be harvested mid to late July as well.

Starting this week, we will have you initial your name when you pick up your box. We have had an unusual number of people coming in to pick up after the name has been checked. though we know there may be an error here or there on our part, the increased number of occurrences caused us to be short on shares this week.

We apologize that there is no lettuce in your share this week, but we are in between plantings and do not have enough to go around. We should have it again next week.

We hope you have a happy and safe holiday weekend!

The week you have be waiting for is finally here!!! Garlic has arrived!! Yes folks fresh pulled garlic like nothing you have tasted before, unless you were in the CSA last year! We will have cured garlic as well, but like you we can’t wait for the fresh garlic!!!

Fresh garlic can be used the same as cured garlic but it is wetter and tends to be a little more potent. The bulbs can be stored in a cool dry place out of the sun, but do not cut the necks down until you are ready to use as the tips may mold when curing, and the stem insures the garlic will not get moldy.

Fresh garlic is best if used within 3 weeks of harvest, unlike cured that can be stored for 6 months or more. I doubt it will last that long for most of you.

Also beets are making an appearance for the first time this year for all of you halves and quarter shares.

They are sweet and the recipes this week are sure to please even the pickiest of eaters.

I don’t know about you, but I have been using the fresh garlic in everything and you can absolutely taste a difference. The savoy cabbage this week may be small, but we want to make sure we pick it before the heat burns it and makes it unuseable.

Also, just a reminder to please bring reusable bags with you when picking up your share because in the next couple weeks, the totes will not be lined with bags.

If you like us on Facebook, you can see what other members are doing with their vegetables!

We are just about half way through the summer program and have overall been very pleased with how each weeks boxes have turned out, we do have a lack of fruit available this year due to the spring thaw and refreeze. Many of the orchards will not have peaches and some varieties of apples and plums. Mother nature has not been as kind this year as we would like. Blueberries are just about done for the season, so we will be waiting patiently for the arrival of our awesome musk melons and watermelons, as well as local apples. We just started picking field tomatoes this week and will have plenty to share from this point forward! Tomatoes in Connecticut are not really late this year, they are a late July/August crop. We have had a few of you upset that we have not had a plentiful amount yet, and just to reassure you I checked with 5 other CSA’S in CT this week and have confirmed, none of them received any tomatoes in their share until just this week for 2, and 3 have no tomatoes still. We understand it is deceiving when there is a table of tomatoes in the stand, but it only takes about 100 lbs a day to cover the stand, and 1500 lbs to give everyCSAaquartbasket.

I would like to politely remind everyone, that although we welcome feed back and polite criticism as a way for us to grow and do better, remember those that work here do so by choice and because they love it here. We work on the hottest days, in some of the worst conditions at times, and most much more than 40 hours a week. Berating, belittling, or yelling is not an acceptable form of communication.

We had a great week this week with CSA and the weather!!! It cooled off a little and we were able to catch up on a few things here at the farm. We trust you enjoyed the cooler temperatures as well.

A few housekeeping reminders, first, Please remember to BYOB – bring your own bag or the reusable bags provided for you at your first pick up. We had more than a third of you need to take corn bags this week. It is essential for us to keep the costs down, and with 500 members, every bag counts! Second, please leave the quart or pint containers that tomatoes are in behind. It really saves alot of money and waste and allows us to pass on that savings to you! Lastly, please try your best to come on your selected pick up day, we will continue to hold the share through 4 pm the next day, but have limited cooler space and need to swap the cooler over for the next pick up. We also understand many people have vacations etc in the summer months, but shares will not be held past the next day. As per the contract, shares that are not picked up during your selected time are donated. We have had many people showing up 4-5 days after their pick up day. Rememberyoucanalwayshaveafriendorfamilymemberpickup your share.

We are halfway through now and still have so many new items coming up soon. The heat has forced some items that we generally do not see until the fall, to pop their heads up early. You will likely see a few varieties of winter squash, brussels sprouts, and possibly a few other surprises in your box before the close of the summer share. Some of these may be smaller than we would like, but leaving them on the vine or in the field any longer will likely mean they will bolt and be un useable.

We are pleased to be picking melons now and anticipate watermelons to be coming in heavier soon.

We may have to offer melons to one day a week and rotate if we do not get large enough flush at once. The excessive chipmunk population boom in CT, accompanied with the dry season have cut our melon plant numbers in almost half. But don’t worry, we will work it out that everyone gets melons.

This week is also the start of colored peppers! Sweet and tasty, we know you will enjoy these large and small!

Please continue to bring your own reuseable bags. We still have many people needing 4 -5 corn bags from the stand weekly and have had to reorder bags twice as much this year than last. Remember this program is also about being green and every bit helps! Remember that FAll CSA sign-ups are still available!

We have one more week of melons for you and they will be slowly become less available, so ENJOY now while you can. The season for CT melons is short, so pack it in while you can.

Please be aware, we are very short staffed at the moment due to many employees returning to school etc., please be patient with us when picking up your CSA, there have been only two of us covering most of the 8-7 shift during the week. That means the same 2 people are covering from 8 – 7 every day. Remember you can always start collecting your add ins if we are not right at the podium to check you off. The short staffing has also forced us to close the ice cream shop during very busy times as there are only enough people on for CSA and register. We are hoping to rectify this ASAP. In the meantime, thank you for your patience.

We are entering the home stretch with only four weeks left to go! The excessive heat has caused many things to be ready earlier than they should have been. We will hopefully getting in some bins of apples for next week.

We will have the contract out this coming week for CSA 2017 summer program. Please make sure you READ the contract fully. There will be many changes in store for next season. We are sure the program changes will suit some of you better, and others maybe not as much. Please remember you can always purchase a farm “credit card”. These cards are good for all market purchases. You put $90.00 down and receive $100.00 dollars in credit on your card. That is a 10% savings!!! This may suit some of you better thantheCSA.

We will be offering corn maze tickets at a reduced rate for our CSA members. Unfortunately, due to an incident last year, our insurance company will not allow us to give out free tickets for the maze.
